Rescue Report Winter 2010/2011

Rescue Report: February 2011                Written February 26th 2011

The last part of the year was busy, as we took in 4 dogs in December. 3 were small mix pups and another just 7 months old Then we took in a 7 year old female in February. We also asked for help getting a young male out of the Alpena Shelter.

Cascade, Alpine & Ridge

Cascade, Alpine and Ridge were the mix pups, mixed with Australian shepherds. There were 6 total and we took the 3 that looked more like Berners. These dogs were from a puppy-mill in Indiana that April VanBuren was contacted about. I told her we don’t do mixes and she contacted Vilma Briggs who reluctantly agreed to take them but said she was being overrun with fosters. So I agreed to take 3 and the other 3 went to a rescue April had worked with before. The pups were about 12 weeks old, very cute and somewhat timid. They quickly learned that people were OK and loved our gang, but kept play mostly with each other. We had always talked about getting a pair of pups to raise together sometime. We are over that kind of thinking now.  Three little, crazy, active, poop and peeing machines was much more work than we realized. I know why breeders say they are glad to see them leave. They were a lot of fun and we got attached, and when they left they were very sociable.

Cascade, now Charlie, lives just 20 miles from where he started in Indiana, Ridge, now Lochlan lives an hour south of Toledo, OH, and Alpine, now Dexter Lives in Waterford, MI. It was amazing that all 3 homes send us e-mails telling us the each puppy was the best puppy they had ever met, and were so smart! I guess we were good foster parents for them.

Seeker

Seeker, came from a home in Milford, MI. His owner contacted us saying her was too much for her as she had recently broken her arm in a fall. When I picked him up I found that his life consisted of a maybe 4 foot square area at the end of the island in the kitchen on a very slippery floor. He was very shy and I could not touch him while at their home. He was so very skinny with no muscle tone and he walked strangely. When I got him home he self contained himself in a corner of out dining room where he was surrounded by furniture, so he had his safe spot. It took several days for him to finally come out into the dining room, then a few day to the living room with us. There he discovered the dogs beds and that was it for him. He found heaven. He has learned to trust us and loved rough housing with Rigel and Hoagie. His strange walking was from his standing on a slick floor with n o exercise. So much so that his tendons on the inside were tighter that the outside causing his feet to rotate inward. After about 6 weeks of playing his walking became almost normal. He had so little exercise; his pads were still puppy soft and were getting cut on the snow when he first came until they got toughened up by playing.

Seeker really attached himself to me. He followed me everywhere, and would sleep on my lap, so the affection became mutual. Seeker would have stayed with us if he did not have the compulsion to eat toys, blankets, socks, pillows, but mostly our gang’s stuffed toys. We had to puppy proof the house and ultimately had to crate him when we were gone. His adoption got delayed several times because he ate something and we wanted to make sure it passed before he went to his new home. He now has a 1 year old Berner buddy to beat up and lives in his new fenced yard in Ohio.

Heidi

Heidi is 6 ½ years old and the people decide they could not keep her or it turns out did not want to keep her. They wanted me to get her ASAP so I met them in Birch Run, as they lived west of Saginaw. I had a bunch of questions to ask but lost all train of thought when they pulled up in their pick up with Heidi in a crate in the back of the OPEN pick up at is was only 15 degrees out!!!! I don’t know why they did not have her inside of the extended cab. Heidi is very friendly and outgoing, sat immediately on my feet and lick my hands. So I loaded her into my warm vehicle and left after getting things signed, forgetting to ask questions about her.

She is a very sweet girl with an obsessive need to nibble on something or lick us when she get on some sort of furniture with us, especially the bed. Again, she has attached herself to me. She had a knee repaired some time ago and either the knee or her hips bother her when she sits. She loves her toys and teases everyone running around the yard showing me her toys, but plays keep-a-way with us. We are working on a home of some club members for her forever home, hopefully it will work out, the family is great, just no fence but have one in the pans for this spring.

Maggilo I found on petfinder at the Alpena Animal control. Do to logistics, I imposed on Brad and patty Aarons in Lewiston to check him out. I did not want to ask because of their losing their old girl that they rescued over a year ago, Brookie. He looked like a perfect Berner in the picture, but was listed a s a mix. So the Aarons went to check him out and found him to be a mix, but an absolute love, he looked all Berner but no

Maggs and his new sisters

tail!!! He is a Berner/Aussie mix, confirmed, but is 95% Berner (just missing a tail and has a big diamond Swiss kiss), in looks and personality. So Patty, fell in love and big hearted Brad, said “just keep him”. Done! Home found! No foster needed!! Maggs is a lucky boy!

He was tested and came back as having heartworms. So he is being treated once his weight gets up to where it should be. Keeping him quiet will be difficult as he already has the routine down to go crazy running with Trina and Skye on their 600 acres. He is a perfect match for Trina as he can keep up with her on the daily runs, and can even almost match her bounce! Once again the downfall of fostering, you fall in love. We know Maggs could not have a better life and family. I hope they adopt me next.

As I write this there are 2 missing Berners, one in the Marshal and one in Torch Lake. We are keeping  fingers crossed that they are found healthy and safe. It is thought the Torch lake dog may have been stolen.

Once again we are preparing for the DCK show in Detroit. We have an 8 foot booth for our Breed Education/Rescue table. We have solicited help from club members to assist this year so there will be some new faces helping get the word out on our great breed. Thanks to all that have offered to help!

We still have many t-shirts, sweatshirts and mugs available for our fundraiser. I will have them available at the annual meeting for those interested. If you let me know what you would like to bring, I will gladly pull it for you.             Thanks for your support

Heidi has come in, and gone to her new home

Heidi is a senior girl who will be 7 years old in May. She is 7 but you would never know it, she loves to play with toys and cuddle in bed. She has a habit of nibbling on cloth and love to lick faces. She is vet sweet and deserved a new home where people had time for her. So  now she has a fenced yard, and a new young berner buddy to play with. So far she is doing very well and is adjusting to being the new toy for her younger sibling.

Seeker has a new home!!

Seeker has a new berner Brother to play with, a big fenced yard and super nice new parents! Seeker was very slow to meet all the people that came to meet him, until this couple. Seeker chose them by going right up to them, wanting to see them. Plus with a new buddy to play with, and my promise of a fenced yard, we are hoping Seek’s will be very happy with his new family.

Seeker has come into foster

Hey, I'm not so skinny!

ADOPTION PENDING——- AS OF 2-5-11

Seeker was born on May 1st, 2010. He is a lanky boy that has not had a lot of experiences in his short life. He was kept in a very confined area without much exercise and when his owner was injured in a bad fall he got even less. So his owner decided he was more that she was able to do at the time and gave him to rescue. He is shy, due to lack of socialization but will adjust to new people in a short time. He is learning how to play and that he can have a larger life that his previously confined one. He was moving hip rear end an limping on his front leg, so we had x-rays done to see if he was dysplastic and nothing obvious was evident. It was determined that because of his lack of muscle and having to cope on a slippery floor his tendons are shorter on one side and should stretch to normal with exercise and a little easy Therapy.

He is a sweet boy that we have become attached to, he at first self contained himself to a small area between out table and hutch. He now lays in the living room and has discovered how nice dog beds are. Because of Seekers limited chances at life we want him to be able to take advantage of his widened world and want him to go to a fenced yard where he can get the exercise and his pace along with walks and play time.

Seeker is neutered and up to date on all shots. Because of his shyness we do not recoment a home with children under 12.

AHHhhhh…. Soooo  MUCH better than a hard floor!

UPDATE 1/8/11

Seeker has put on some decent muscle playing with our gang. He legs, hips and shoulders are definitely larger and his walking in much improved as he is becoming fit. He has developed an affinity for stuffed toys and a few other items, he has eaten. So no stuffed toys for Seeker without constant supervision. He ate part of one before I could get to him and he was right in front of me. He has also eaten a pillow off the couch and some unmentionables. So this secures that her got to a home with no young children. Otherwise he will assuredly end up at the ER.
UPDATE 1/27/11
Seeker is still available and we are actively interviewing adoptive homes. Seeker’s tendency to eat things has continued. So he will have a few mandatory home requirements. They are a above ground fenced yard, no young children that can leave toys or ingestible objects around (as much as is possible), willing to take him to a “positive reinforcement” style obedience class and preferably a playmate that he can rough house with.. This will help in in confidence and socialization that the needs.

Bernese/Aussie mixes

I need a home

Aren’t I cute! Do you want me?
Cass, Alpine (AL), Ridge & an ugly guy (me)

As of 12/18/10 All  have been adopted .

We are taking in some Berner/Aussie mixes. Mom Was an Aussie and Dad was a Berner. They are 10 weeks old and were from an Amish breeder that thought they would be a nice mix, but did not sell as he had hoped. We are getting in 4 males, 2 have very Berner-like markings and 2 have thinner blazes, but everything else looks like a Bernese. The dad was of average size, so we don’t know how big they will get. We are thinking the 60-70 pound range, but could go either way. They will be in foster most likely Sunday. They seem a little overwhelmed with new things, so they will need to got to homes without small children. They are estimated at least 15 pounds right now. They become outgoing after a short adjustment to new things, but are still very impressionable to scary things. They will need to be socialized and trained as any puppy needs at this age. Please contact us for any additional information.

UPDATE 11/30

All the boys have been neutered, shots and frontline. They have roundworms and are being treated.  I think Alpine (AL) is the smartest and most dominate of the 3. He has asked several times to go out by pawing at the door, he also is actually, deliberately lifting his leg at 11-12 weeks! I don’t know what that means, but find it interesting. He like to come up on my lap and seems to be the most distressed when left alone. Actual weight at the vets was 16.7

Ridge seems the sweetest, and still most outgoing. He is the largest at 19.8 His ears are slightly shorter and has the narrower muzzle. He also will jump up to be picked up on my lap. Ridge and AL play all the time together so a buddy would be great for them.

Cascade (Cass) is more independent, with play in the group and by himself. He is 19.5 pounds. He has the most Berner look of the 3 and more of the Berner temperament but also a temper. He seems a little skittish still but loves his brothers and all 3 will go tumbling while playing.

All do not act at all that they had surgery yesterday, running and playing. They all love toys now and carry around the squeak and grunt ones as their favorites. Seeing no issues with the neuter they are ready to go.

Cass went to his home in Indiana, AL went to a home in Michigan and Ridge went to Ohio.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Kia and Bella are now sisters!!

Kia and Bella went to their new together. Kia needed and outgoing playmate and Bella loves everything, so a sister will be tons of fun as both love to play. Being with just a few months of each other in age, we are hoping for a long life together. They now live in a fenced yard where Bella will become a family dog living in the house, full time for the first time in a year and a half. The girls now reside in Saginaw, MI

Bella has had a rough life

I want to be part of a family

Bella came into her current owners life when her oldest son told her that a friend of his had a Bernese Mountain Dog that was kept in a 8’ x 10’ kennel behind his house. The dog had been purchased as a puppy (born approx. Nov 2008) for the guy’s girlfriend and small son. She was kept in the house until she started getting big and knocking the little boy down. Instead of training her, they moved her to the back yard. Since then, the girlfriend and son moved out. The dog got very little attention after that. She had no overhead shelter except for a small shade tree. She was routinely fed and watered but stayed in the kennel full of mud and feces. She picked her up on July 20thand took her straight to the vet’s for a checkup, shots, and grooming. she also had her microchipped. Luckily, she tested negative for heartworms. The groomer had to completely shave her because of severe matting. She weighed about 65 pounds and was full of whipworms. She was treated for the worms. When she was spayed September 17thshe weighed 71 pounds. Now she is a very healthy and happy dog. She wishes she had the time for her that she deserves. She will make a great dog for someone that can spend time with her and give her plenty of exercise. She gets along well with cats and two Pomeranians. She even allows her 8 pound pom Chip to be alpha. She does well in the house but she has not been kept her in for more than 2 hours at a time. She stays in a kennel attached to a section of a barn with access to a 20’ x 25’ fenced in area. In the evenings after work and on weekends she spends time outside working around the farm. She has learned to sit on command, comes when called or whistled for, and goes in the kennel when you say ‘kennel’ and reward her with a treat. She needs more training to stop her from jumping when she is overly excited. Bella is a gem and deserves a wonderful new home where she can be loved.

We want Bella to go to a home where she will be part of the family, inside with the people. She likes people and will be a good family dog. She will need basic training for obedience and we are sure some house training. Since she has been in kennels her whole life, we want her to have a fenced yard to run and play in as she most likely does not know what boundaries are.

Kia has come into foster

I'M SHY BUT LOVING

Kia is a 31 month old spayed girl, born on 3/11/08. She is AKC registered, but from an Amish breeder. She is lightly boned at about 80 pounds, nicely marked.

Kia is a shy girl that becomes stressed around small children. In her last home she hid under the bed for 4 months after the arrival of a new baby. For this reason we will not put her in a home with children under 8 years old. She is also timid around new people, especially men. It takes a little time to warm up but she will. She has only been here for 5 days, so we are still evaluating for a bit. Because of her fears, she will require a above ground fenced yard because if frightened she will not come and will run away.

10/22/10 update

After spending over a week with Kia, was have determined that she needs a quiet home with no children. She has trust issues with new things, and has to get reacquainted with people if they have been gone for a day or so. She is loving and likes to curl up on the couch with us and will sleep on the bed if invited. She will occasionally eat sox or the like if not watched.

Caleb and Eli have gone to Kansas!

We were fortunate enough to find a home wiling to keep both these older boy together. We have brought them back to appropriate weights and got the clean ad worm free. They need more time before being treated for their heart worms, so their new home is going to finish getting them healthy and do their treatment.

They made the 7-leg, 2 day trip to Kansas City with the help of volunteers driving the distance back to back on Aug 5 & 6th. All who were involved remarked on what sweet dogs they are.
